DJ POLO – NEXT DAY AIR
With recent releases on RKS & Super Kitchen, Bristol based DJ Polo is back at it again with a new heater on one of NYC’s finest labels High End Times. Funky horns accompany an extremely groovy rhythm with crisp samba snare drums to make this track what it is. ‘Next Day Air’ comes as part of the 5th instalment of the club series from the label and as the series says its 100% club ready, guaranteed to get the floor moving, definitely a producer to watch.
KILLJOY – UNDERSTAND/BANZAI
Tumble Audio family and Joyride head honcho Killjoy also comes through this week with a release on newcomers to the scene, RDWRK. This is their second release and an extremely good EP to really get their foot in the door. ‘Understand’ really shows off Killjoys signature Grimey and Funky styles with big almost horn sounding basses, verby Claps and skippy hats ready to give any system a run for its money. ‘Banzai’ takes a slightly less heavy approach and more of traditional UK Funky take and has a really bright crisp organ sound in the intro accompanied by choppy vocals following into a wavey, wonkey high pitch bassline that will get stuck in your head for hours.
WöLFE – TEMPTATIONS EP
Sheffield’s Wölfe are becoming widely known for some of the freshest sounds in Garage, Grime, Bassline & Funky and prove that with their latest track ‘Temptation’ of The Temptations EP released via Hot Cakes Bass. It takes you back with it’s choppy vocal sample made famous by Tessela’s Hackney Parrot with tropical laced percussion to keep you dancing.
HIGH CLASS FILTER: DOOMED EP
Reprezent Radio resident High Class Filter makes for a huge debut release, not only for himself but also for his london based collective Resonate Sounds which he runs along with fellow Reprezent resident Kade. The ‘Doomed EP’ takes UK Funky and fuses it with heavy UK Bass influences with ‘Doomed’ featuring Grimey basses and dark percussion, wobbly sounds and perfectly placed cowbell, it ends up becoming very hypnotising to listen to! Along with this comes ‘AOE’ with wonky discordant synths and sword slices complimented by a very bouncy yet skitty beat. Really, really recommend this EP to anyone!
DJ MADD – BADMAN TALKIN’
Next up on Nottinghams favourite label Tumble Audios schedule is a HUGE EP from USA’s DJ Madd. With remixes from Murder He Wrote, Tony Quattro and Archive it’s definitely a must hear. Both the MHW & TQ Remixes are going straight into the Funky playlist, although both are within the same ball park, they both take very different approaches with Murder going for the more dubby but groovy UK Funky remix compared to that of Quattro bring the more tribal vibes focussing more on the percussion side of things with big bongos, congas, Cowbells and Grimey flutes.
BOEKE – PRONTO EP
Boeke’s recently released EP titled ‘Pronto’ infuses tech house with funky tribal rhythms into 2 carnival-esque style stompers. The title track kicks off with a pounding drum beat that drops into an indigenous breakdown accompanied by cheering vocals which leads into an absolute banger of a track that you can’t help but nod your head along to! Much the same can be said about the second track on the EP titled ‘Favela’, which gives off a funkier feel in the intro with more playful vocals accompanying the drums this time. The whole carnival vibe surrounding the EP certainly makes it stand out, and definitely deserves a spot as one of the Marimba Top Picks.
JUICE – LOVE ISLAND EP
Here we have a slightly more progressive track from Juice titled ‘Love Island’ which features on Super Kitchen’s recently released compilation ‘Rhythm Foundation Vol. 1’. It kicks off with a sparse intro that slowly flows into hard hitting drums accompanied by various grimey leads and sounds that give the track its unique flavour and is definitely one of the more overlooked tracks on the compilation.
DISMANTLE & SNøW FT. DREAD MC – PEACE & LOVE
With all 3 collaborators already having individually smashed the scene, they’ve come together to release one of the biggest tracks to come from lobster boy records this year. ‘Peace & Love’ features glitched out samba drum rolls, hard hitting bass and percussions that combine perfectly with Dread’s vocals, which ties the whole track together to create that all too special tribalistic feeling, and is certain to get people moving on the dancefloor!
CARDINAL SOUND FT. KILLA P – DIFFERENT STYLE
Starting off with an eerie and spacious intro laced with primitive percussion hits from the likes of Cardinal Sound, this track develops into a hard hitting, bass heavy tune with Killa P’s classic grimey yet profound vocals complimenting the beat. Another solid release from More Time Records that is sure to go off in the rave.
